In 1992, almost eight decades after the tragic
events at Spirit Lake, Mary Haskett, the last
known survivor of the Ukrainians interned there,
spoke sadly of her childhood memories and of the
loss of her two-year-old sister, Carolka Manko,
who died in May of 1915 and was laid to rest there.
Her words of remembrance are perhaps the best
epitaph for the people who were confined within
the barbed wire fences at Spirit Lake and across
Canada during the First World War:

They were just ordinary farm folks, I guess.
They thought they'd try their luck at a bigger
country .... But the dream fell apart.

 - from the essay "Badly Treated in Every Way: The
Internment of Ukrainians in Quebec During the
First World War", by Peter Melnycky, in "The
   Ukrainian Experience In Quebec"
