In Memoriam Ann Hoshowsky

(April 10, 1924 – March 10, 2007)

In a life full of accomplishments, none gave the late Mrs. Ann Hoshowsky (nee Harasymchuk) greater pleasure  than her dedication to Canada’s Ukrainian community.

A tireless and dependable volunteer, Ann could always be seen at the Kyiv Pavilion during Caravan, selling Ukrainian Easter eggs, embroidery, art, and other souvenirs. When she wasn’t working at the souvenir table, Ann could be found in the kitchen at the Ukrainian National Federation Hall at 297 College Street in Toronto, working long into the night alongside her husband Morris, her sister Mary Kohut, and their many friends.

Blessed with a beautiful voice, Ann was a member of several choirs. For many years, she served as Secretary for the Toronto Branch of the Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada. Near her home, Ann helped to successfully establish the North Toronto Ukrainian School, which was attended by her two children, Terrence and Robert.

The eldest of seven children born to Theodore and Lena Harasymchuk, Ann was born in Rosa, Manitoba. A family of the Great Depression, the Harasymchuks moved to Toronto for a better life in 1937, the same year Ann met Morris Hoshowsky, who would later become her husband of 60 years.

Outside the Ukrainian community, Ann dedicated herself to many other pursuits and charities. A great believer in the political process, she served as a District Returning Officer during provincial and federal elections. She was an active volunteer for over three decades for a variety of causes, including the Canadian Heart Foundation, United Appeal, the Arthritis Society of Canada, and the Canadian Cancer Society. Later in life, Ann took great pride in serving as Federation Secretary for the Toronto and Area Council of Women, where she made many friends. Along with others from the Council, Ann volunteered to greet new immigrants to Canada at citizenship court, welcoming people from all over the world to their new homeland.

A loving and devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law to Cathy and Liz, and loving grandmother to Kaitlyn, James and Victoria, Ann Hoshowsky passed away on March 10, 2007. A committed volunteer her entire life, her final wishes were that monies raised in her memory be donated to the Ukrainian National Federation Building Fund, and the Children of Chornobyl Canadian Fund.

Even after her death, Ann’s generous spirit lives on.
