“We Know Who You Are/ Ми про Вас знаємо!”
Centenary Pioneer Recognition Program Nominations Deadline: May 15, 2013
Edmonton - A “How-to” seminar at the Provincial Archives of Alberta (Edmonton), on March 20th, 2013 successfully concluded the third year of the “We Know Who You Are/ Ми про Вас знаємо!” seminar series conducted by the Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project in communities of east central Alberta.
“We are expecting a response to our seminars in the community that should even surpass previous years’ results”, says Radomir Bilash, Project Manager of the Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project. “Our 2013 nomination list already contains more than 200 people, and we look forward to many more nominations before this year’s deadline of May 15th”.
Seminars were held from late January to March in communities throughout east central Alberta, including: Andrew, Lamont, Mundare, Smoky Lake, Two Hills, Vegreville, and Myrnam. This year for the first time, a “How-to” seminar was conducted in Innisfree.
The seminars examined how historical records and archival documents may be used for family history research. Participants learned how to nominate pioneers for the Centenary Pioneer Recognition Program using the guidelines and finding aids provided by project staff. In addition, the participants of the Edmonton seminar had an opportunity to visit the Sandra Thompson Reading Room to become acquainted with its research facilities.
The “We Know Who You Are/ Ми про Вас знаємо!” seminar series drew attention to the following important points:
There are only two years left to nominate pioneers for the monument;
This year’s nominations are due May 15, 2013;
You can still nominate pioneers, Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian alike, who settled in east central Alberta prior to 1913 (their year of settlement is reflected on monument);
You can pre-register those who settled in 1914;
You can nominate extended family or neighbours of ancestral pioneers, provided you locate and submit the necessary documentation;
You are not required to be current residents of the original homestead in order to participate in this program;
There will be over 4,000 individuals listed on the Centenary Pioneer Monument by August of 2013.
