In Memoriam Mrs. Evhenia
Barycky, Teacher
“Forget not; ne’er forget, the days of youth
so bright”
Ivan Franko, 1882
It was with great sadness that we received
the news of the death of our dear teacher Evhenia Barycky. She was born on March 15, 1915 in Gyor, Hungary and
died on March 14, 2010 in Toronto,
one day shy of her 95th Birthday.
Mrs. Barycky was an extraordinary Ukrainian School
teacher in Sudbury for
the Ukrainian National Federation for 24 years. She loved her work; in her
gentle, soft mannered way, she led us to learn the rubrics of the Ukrainian
language but most importantly to love and cherish the literature of our
ancestors and rich Ukrainian culture.
She did this not just by rote teaching but by producing and directing
plays such as The Mitten and Little Red Riding Hood (Chervona
Shapochka), and by teaching us poems, carols, Easter and spring ritual
songs - hayivky, and dramatic tableaux.
So many of us were introduced to theatre and the stage because of her
efforts. Her confidence in us never
wavered. In those 24 years she touched
the lives and souls of hundreds of students.
We loved her because she cared about us, and cared that we learned and
deeply experienced in its entirety the whole of the Ukrainian soul, spirit and
culture.
