All-Canadian Mazepa Art Competition

The Embassy of Ukraine in Canada and the League of Ukrainian Canadians (LUC) are pleased to invite  young Ukrainian Canadians to take part in an all-Canadian art competition as part of a larger Mazepa-related project. The competition is dedicated to the 370th Anniversary of Cossack Hetman Ivan Mazepa’s birth, as well as the 300th Anniversary of the Battle of Poltava, Mazepa’s death, and the Ukrainian–Swedish Union.

The Mazepa Art Competition Committee/Jury is composed of LUC members, Embassy staff and Ukrainian students, who are members of Ukrainian student clubs and associations.  All members of the committee have artistic and humanitarian background, making them appropriate for the job and qualified to carry out adjudicating duties and responsibilities.

“It is an honour to work with youth on a common project that connects our past with present, in the context of an all Canadian-Ukrainian initiative under the slogan: Have Your Pride – Honour Mazepa,” said George Kelebay, member of the committee/jury and LUC-Etobicoke Branch. The Mazepa-related project goes under the motto: “Have Your Pride – Honour Mazepa,” and the art competition, as an important part of this project, is supported by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Ukrainian World Congress.

The purpose of the competition is to attract younger generations of Ukrainian Canadians to understand better Ukraine’s history and the stature of Hetman Mazepa, who did much to develop Ukraine’s culture and lay the foundation for Ukraine’s independence movement. The Embassy and LUC are certain that participation in the competition provides the opportunity to become better acquainted with the history of the Ukrainian nation, give due respect to the life of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, and yield knowledge and understanding of his achievements.

The Mazepa Art Competition is open to all youth and especially to Ukrainian youth.  The committee/jury plans to announce its results and winners of this contest on December 29, 2009.  Detailed information about the competition’s rules and guidelines can be found on LUC’s website http://www.lucorg.com and on EUC’s website http://www.ukremb.ca  Submitted artworks are to be in “jpg” file format and sent to mazepaartcompetition@lucorg.com. Be it the committee’s pleasure to welcome submitted artworks for the competition.
