Condemns
Ukraine’s Draft Law on Language
The Ukrainian National Federation of
Canada (UNF of Canada) wishes to express its deep concern and unequivocally
opposes the adoption of the Draft Law on the Principles of State Language
Policy (“Draft Law” June 5, 2012) by the Ukrainian Parliament - Verkhovna
Rada.
This Draft Law
contravenes the Constitution of Ukraine, which clearly indicates that the
Ukrainian language is the State Language of Ukraine. By allowing the Draft Law to proceed,
it will allow the Russian language, which already has significant influence and
usage, to encroach further on all spheres of Ukrainian daily life.
The protection of the
Ukrainian language is imperative; the Russian language does not need special
status in Ukraine.
The UNF of Canada
(est. 1932), a member organization of both the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and
the Ukrainian World Congress, supports their positions calling for debate on
the Draft Law to cease, and maintain Ukrainian as the only State
Language. We strongly urge everyone to
sign the petition in this regard organized by the Ukrainian Canadian
Congress:
