Community Leader
Petro Mycak Receives
Queen Jubilee Medal
June 6, 2013-Ottawa, ON - On Saturday May 25 2013, long time community leader Mr. Petro Mycak was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
The UCC was pleased to present this prestigious honour on behalf of his Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada to Mr. Mycak for his years of dedication and service to the Ukrainian Community in Windsor, Ontario and indeed Canada. UCC National President Mr. Paul Grod proudly spoke of Mr. Mycak’s accomplishments and presented the award.
“Petro Mycak is a legend in our community,” said UCC President Paul Grod. “He is someone who has given without ever asking. Not only is he very committed to his community in Windsor, he’s committed to his community right across Canada and right across the world.”
UCC Ontario Provincial Council President Stefan Andrusiak, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons Joe Comartin and Windsor Essex MP Brian Masse were present along with Windsor municipal Councillor Ed Sleiman and over 100 members of the community were in attendance.
“Petro Mycak distinguishes himself by bringing joy and good humour, when appropriate to the issues and Ukrainian constituency he has represented. He has experienced gunfire and has lost friends in whose company he fought for justice and freedom during the War. Still he is an optimist, a sprinter- a doer,” said Stefan Andrusiak, President of UCC Ontario.
Councillor Sleiman also addressed the crowd and offered sincere congratulations on behalf of Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis.
Upon receiving his medal, Mr. Mycak spoke about his past specifically about his departure from his Ukrainian homeland and his experiences in the joining the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Mr. Mycak spoke about his initial arrival in Windsor in November of 1950. At that time, he was elected president of the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM) and joined the UCC in 1955.
For over 50 years, Mr. Mycak has been involved in countless organizations and fulfilled many roles including the position of president of the UCC Windsor Branch as well as president and member of National Executive of the League of Ukrainian Canadians.
Mr. Mycak has also contributed to his local community through the Windsor Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and Heritage Language School, as well as the Ukrainian National Aid Association.
