Remembrance Flame Arrives in Windsor
The unveiling of the Holodomor
Famine Monument
in Jackson Park, Windsor, Ontario took place on November 13, 2005 under the auspices
of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Windsor Branch and initiative taken by its
president, Mr. Peter Mycak.dent.
On Friday, May 23, 2008 at 10
a.m., a panakhyda was held at this site for the repose of the souls of
the millions who perished in the Holodomor Famine in Ukraine in 1932 -1933. This event
coincided with the arrival of the International Remembrance Flame to Windsor, Ontario
as part of the Flame’s cross-Canada and world-wide travels. Local Members of Parliament Brian Masse (NDP
- Windsor West) and Joe Comartin (NDP - Windsor-Tecumseh) were in attendance
along with Mr. Ron Jones, Windsor City Councillor. Holodomor survivor Stephania
Korostil as well as a large number of people from the Windsor and Essex County
Ukrainian community attended, representing the League of Ukrainian Canadians,
the Ukrainian National Federation, the Ukrainian Women’s Organization, the
Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association, senior citizens
groups Zolota Zhoda and Veselka as well as Sts. Vladimir and Olha
Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Vladimir.
Dr. Ihor Stebelsky was the key-note speaker. The UCC Windsor Branch sponsored
the event, with its president Peter Mycak as head of the organizing committee.
