This year, UNF Toronto’s Camp “Sokil” in
Hawkestone, Ontario on Lake Simcoe started its 51st season with a
bit of a “Face Lift”. After last year’s extremely successful 50th
anniversary celebration, funds were raised to renovate the Children’s Camp
kitchen facilities. Earlier this year, volunteer members came out in the early
spring, with its rain, snow and cold damp conditions to start work on the
renovations to get them finished in time for the July 4th opening of
the Children’s Camp.
Among the improvements
completed this year was a full reconstruction of all supporting foundation
structural footings, the installation of 2000 square feet of new flooring,
installation of stainless steel walls and construction of new shelving, and
stainless steel work surfaces in the Children’s Camp kitchen area. This
renovation also included the installation of a new stove and new dishwashers,
as well as improvements to the plumbing and electrical system in the building
and was completed with the construction of new front and back decks.
This work was made possible
by the generous donations and fundraising which took place during last year’s
50th Anniversary “Ivana Kupalo” programme at Camp “Sokil”, and most
of the work was carried out by volunteer members of the Ukrainian National
Federation, Toronto Branch. With the completion of these renovations, the Camp
has received a much needed facelift, bringing it into compliance with all
safety, fire and health regulations and providing the children at Camp “Sokil”
with a clean, well appointed and safe dining room for many years to come.
These improvements are the
first in a long list of improvements planned for Camp “Sokil”, including the
construction of new bathroom facilities, and renovations to the camp sleeping
quarters, which will only be possible through continued support from members
and camp alumni. If you would like to contribute to the
