Maryka’s Treasures…. What are they?

Maryka Gulka-Chabluk’s eyes glow with excitement, when she talks about her treasures. Chabluk, a lifelong singer, song writer, dancer and educator, claims her list of treasures would burst the seams of any treasure chest, but most are contained in the songs she has collected for her newest CD, Maryka’s Treasures. Chabluk seamlessly weaves Ukrainian language into her original songs. They are flavoured with folk stories, fun characters and her Christian faith. “I noticed there was a need for quality music for Ukrainian children, who primarily speak English,” explains Chabluk. These children might have a "Baba," and know what "borshch" is, but they don’t have to speak Ukrainian to enjoy the music.  Children who know Ukrainian can sing along almost instantly.

Chabluk states "My music reminds families that ‘God is Good’ and calls each one of us to follow Him. We can dance, sing, laugh, learn and imagine, knowing that God is always with us!  This realization is my most precious treasure of life!" Another song, "Canadian Pride" has children marching in a parade and waving flags since Chabluk believes that Ukrainian Canadians are proud to play a part in making Canada unique.  The listener is drawn into the engaging themes and the concepts of faith and learning another language. As a singer and dancer, Maryka has performed in Europe, Japan, Australia, and North America and has to her credit three very successful Ukrainian folk recordings with Duet Maryna.

During a colourful live performance at last summer’s Toronto Ukrainian Festival on Bloor Street West Festival, children joined in the fun by playing rhythm instruments, making borsch, wearing costumes and using their imagination. Children are attracted to her “like bees to honey” said school trustee Peter Kotyk, and it’s often hard to tell who is having more fun - Chabluk or the children. She has a very interactive and energetic style of performance.

What's in the future?  Maryka will be performing her Ukrainian folk repertoire and children's music at many festivals, schools and concerts. She is developing learning activities for school and home use, as well as computer programs to accompany her songs. In this way, she is fulfilling her God-given purpose. "Ukrainian music is my calling, and I rely on my faith and prayers to guide me," she proclaims. Her passion and love of performing will keep Chabluk on stages from Kyiv to Kelowna, Rome to Regina, for many years to come.
