Sokil Golf Tournament Success not Dampened

By Slawko Borys

The 2008 UNF Camp Sokil Golf Tournament was a success again this year despite the cold and wet weather. On  Saturday, August 9th, 38 golfers arrived at Heritage Hills golf course near Barrie, Ont. The rain was no deterrent and after a short delay, the skies cleared up enough to let the groups tee off. By some stroke of luck the rain held off long enough for everyone to play all 18 holes. The golfers returned to Camp Sokil at Hawkestone for the annual BBQ dinner, awards and raffle. Joining them were other members of the Sokil community as well as a few special guest, members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who are at Canadian Forces Base Camp Borden (near Barrie) undergoing joint Canadian-Ukrainian NATO English language training. As usual, members of the Ukrainian Women’s Organization and BBQ Chef Greg Taras provided everyone with a delicious dinner, which was followed by door prizes, awards and a 50/50 Draw.

Over the years the Sokil Tournament has raised thousands of dollars to support projects at Camp Sokil, most recently the construction of the new camp barracks, completed in early August of this year. A plaque was unveiled at the dinner commemorating the completion of construction, and it will be mounted on the building in time for an official opening and blessing in July 2009. Special thanks were given to all those individual supporters of the tournament, as well as to the Ukrainian Credit Union Ltd. for their support of this event each year.

Organizing the tournament is no easy feat, and each year its great success is in large part thanks to the hard work and efforts of Greg Adamowich and the entire Adamowich Family who have, over many years, been the driving force behind organizing this event. On behalf of the UNF Toronto Branch and our membership, as Branch President, I would like to thank the Adamowich’s for their dedication in support of our organization.

The evening ended at “Sokil’s Pavilion” by the beach where the annual “Sports Weekend Zabava” was a big hit, even with the light rain falling and prevailing cooler than usual temperatures.
