Parents for Holodomor Education

The League of Ukrainian Canadian Women (LUCW) and League of Ukrainian Canadians (LUC) will launch a grass roots movement to organize the Parents’ Coalition for Holodomor Education (PCHE).  All interested parents can join PCHE and attend its meeting on Thursday, September 20, 2007, at 6 pm at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, 83 Christie St. in Toronto.

“The idea for the Parents’ Coalition for Holodomor Education was born in the midst of many private conversations of parents, who want their children to study the Holodomor in schools”, says Raya Radejewsky, one of many community leaders and parents interested in becoming involved in the Coalition.

The PCHE’s aim is to act as an independent, grass roots based advocacy group for the implementation of the topic of the Holodomor (Famine Genocide in Ukraine 1932-33) as a compulsory unit to be studied in every school in the Province of Ontario.

PCHE will also act as a voice for parents and show how the current education system fails their children in teaching them about facts and history.  It will formulate its own plan of action, its benchmarks and implementation strategy in order to build up wider support for Holodomor education.  Among other things, it will lobby school trustees, school boards, the Ministry of Education and other provincial politicians.

According to Chrystyna Bidiak, the President of LUCW, “there is no one better to speak for children than a loving parent.  Good education is a priority for parents and curriculum that omits important facts, such as the Holodomor, does not give children the best education possible.”

The PCHE meeting is open to all.  Refreshments will be served.
