Studio
Orest Susko, an
accomplished professional in the field of music recording, has another laurel
to his credit. The Ukrainian Canadian
has been appointed as a lead re-recording mixer for Todd AO studios in Los Angeles, California.
Orest
has joined the ranks of a multiple Oscar-winning team in the Ascent Media Group
Creative Sound Services division that mixes theatrical feature films out of the
Todd AO West-Lantana complex located in Santa Monica.
Prior
to joining Todd AO, Orest spent 10 years as a senior re-recording mixer with
Alliance Atlantis Communications in Toronto, working on both national and international
television and film projects.
After
graduating from McMaster University in Hamilton and studying in Toronto, Orest worked as a recording engineer for music and
television projects at Master’s Workshop in Toronto. Orest has mixed several films for acclaimed Canadian
director David Cronenberg including Crash, Spider and most recently A
History of Violence. His work has garnered him 12 Gemini nominations, 3
Genie nominations, a CAS award, an International Monitor award, 2 primetime
Emmy nominations and an Emmy.
In
the music realm, Orest has worked with Canadian and International artists such
as Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, Kim Mitchell and Cowboy Junkies. In the Ukrainian community, he has worked
with groups across North America, including the Vesnivka Choir of Toronto, the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus in Detroit, and the Kubasonics from Edmonton. His has also worked on live concert and theatrical productions,
film scores, commercials, variety specials and IMAX films.
Orest
is a current member of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, following in the
footsteps in his father and his grandfather, the late Paul Stepowy–a bandura
craftsman from Grimsby, Ontario. The son of Makar and Orysia Sushko, Orest attended
St Vladimir Ukrainian School in Hamilton, danced with the church’s dance ensemble, played
trumpet in the Vodohray orchestra and is past president of Hamilton SUMK and
Eastern Canada SUMK. He also danced with the Marion dancers and Desna in Toronto and played with Bukovina Brass.
Orest
is also well known in many communities for his tsymbaly playing. In this
capacity, he has performed at numerous festivals, including Metro Toronto
International Caravan, Carassauga and the Bloor West Village Festival in Toronto. He continues to entertain audiences in many locales.
