New Online Ukrainian Course Offered

SASKATCHEWAN–This September, Saskatchewan Learning began offering a new online distance-education course for English-speakers who want to learn Ukrainian.

The course, called E-mova: Core Ukrainian 10, is a beginner-level language course. It replaces the Grades 9 and 10 Correspondence Ukrainian courses that were previously offered by Saskatchewan Learning.

The course follows the guidelines and the requirements that have been outlined in the Saskatchewan Core Ukrainian curriculum and has been developed with high school students in mind.  Therefore, it is expected that the course will be of interest to high school students who want to gain a credit in Ukrainian.

But the material will also be a useful tool and resource for adult learners who want to learn Ukrainian for personal enrichment.  It is anticipated that the course material will also be used as a resource by teachers.

Topics covered by the course include: the Ukrainian alphabet, writing skills and basic conversational and grammatical structures and patterns.

Students from Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the United States have registered for the inaugural 2006 fall session.

To take the course, students must have internet access.   They also need to have a computer that is compatible with Microsoft Windows 1998 or 2000 or Windows XP, (though other systems might also be compatible), and must install Ukrainian (Cyrillic) fonts; Acrobat Reader; PowerPoint and Flash Animation. Installation instructions are given as part of the course.

The start date for the next session is in February, 2007. The Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Saskatchewan Provincial Council have provided assistance for this new online course.
