Ukrainian Festival – Bloor West Village Style

By John Pidkowich – The 12th Annual Toronto Ukrainian Festival returned to Bloor West Village, September 12-14, billed as North America’s Largest Ukrainian Street Festival. Notwithstanding the threat of Hanna’s and Ike’s inclement weather, thousands attended the festival which provided entertainment events throughout the day for the entire family. The organisers’ vision is to offer “the largest celebration of Ukrainian spirit in the world – showcasing the best of Ukrainian arts and culture.”

As in previous years, exceptional programming was complemented by attractive vendor kiosks and community information “tent” booths staffed by enthusiastic volunteers encouraging participation in their organizational activities. In this spirit, members of the UWO and UNF Toronto Branches offered free copies of the latest Woman’s World and New Pathway, and invited the community to upcoming events. Exciting new developments at the UNF Community Centre and Trident Hall include the rebirth of the Kalyna Performing Arts Company, the re-opening of the UNF Library Resource Centre, the launch of the Trident Cafй and revival of monthly theme zabava nights.

Festival goers took in the Opening Parade marshalled by legendary rock musician Randy Bachman, attended concert stage live shows with well-known artists and local performing groups, the frolic of the street dance zabavas, and viewed the refinement of the Art Exhibit and Sale. Ukrainians and other Canadians who enjoy and wish for Ukrainian heritage, shared in the opportunity to make the festival a destination to meet family and friends. Again, this year’s venue for Ukrainian culture, ever-present music, great food, refreshments and cheer not only met but exceeded the community’s expectation for “one of the most anticipated events of the season!”
