A History of Ukraine Toronto Book Launch

The new edition of A History of Ukraine: The Land and Its People will have its book launch on September 23, 2010, presented by St. Vladimir Institute in co-operation with the Chair of Ukrainian Studies Foundation and University of Toronto Press

First published in 1996, A History of Ukraine quickly became the authoritative account of the evolution of Europe’s second largest country.  In this fully revised and expanded second edition, Paul Robert Magocsi examines recent developments in the country’s history and uses new scholarship in order to expand our conception of the Ukrainian historical narrative.

Added chapters deal with the Crimean Khanate, Ukraine’s other peoples in the post-World War I revolutionary era, and developments in post-1991 independent Ukraine. New text inserts deal with the pre-historic Trypillians, the Italians of the Crimea and the Black Death, the Karaites, Ottoman and Crimean slavery, Soviet-era ethnic cleansing, and the Orange Revolution. The maps that appear throughout have also been thoroughly revised.

Maintaining his depiction of the multicultural reality of past and present Ukraine, Magocsi has added new information on Ukraine’s various peoples and its diasporas. Comprehensive, innovative, and geared towards teaching, the second revised and expanded edition of A History of Ukraine: The Land and Its Peoples is ideal for teachers, students, and general readers interested in this important part of the world.

Paul Robert Magocsi, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, is professor of history and political science and holds the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto.

At the September 23 book launch, held at St. Vladimir Institute, 620 Spadina Avenue, Toronto at 7 pm., A History of Ukraine: The Land and Its People is available at a special event price: $43.96 (20% off original $54.95).  For more information, call: 416-923-3318.
