Road Map of
Ukraine-Canada Relations
On September 24, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine
Volodymyr Khandogiy and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Lawrence Cannon
met at the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Within the framework of
their business meeting, Mr. Khandogiy and Mr. Cannon signed a “Road Map” of
Ukraine-Canada relations.
This document highlights a new level of
cooperation between Ukraine and Canada, fixing their mutual
desire to deepen bilateral cooperation and determining priorities in economic,
political, security, humanitarian and cultural spheres. The Road Map stresses
common values and interests, including spreading democratic and economic
freedoms, guaranteeing security and territorial integrity, strengthening the
rule of law, and supporting innovative technological development.
Canada
also reconfirms its support for Ukraine’s membership in NATO and
pledges to work with Ukraine and NATO member-states
to reach this goal.
Mr. Khandogiy and Mr. Cannon discussed a wide
range of current political issues in Ukraine-Canada bilateral cooperation. They
agreed to further enhance the positive outcomes of bilateral contacts and
agenda prospects. Mr. Khandogiy also raised the issue of gradual liberalization
of the Canadian visa process for Ukrainian citizens wishing to enter Canada.
Mr. Khandogiy proposed to hold political
consultations between Ukraine’s and Canada’s foreign affairs
ministries in the near future and renewed the invitation to Minister Cannon to
pay a visit to Ukraine.
