UNF Tournament golfers teeing-off on the greensOn Saturday, August 7, 2010, 43 golfers (including duffers) gathered at the Shanty Bay Golf Club north of Barrie, Ont. for the annual Ukrainian National Federation (Toronto) Camp Sokil Golf Tournament. There have been so many, we have lost count! Tee-off time was 11 am. and golfers were blessed with great weather, thanks to a personal call to the late Father Michael Luchka by the tournament chairman, Eugene Masney.

The golf tournament committee consisted of Eugene Masney, Stephen Masney, Dianna Fedun, Donna Orlick and Zenon Chwaluk who organized the successful event.  A special thank you goes to Anne Fedun, Anne Rebryk, Irene Cord, and Genya Hunchak for their contribution preparing a wonderful dinner. A job well done!

Eugene Masney was Master Barbeque Chef and Adam Pecio repaired and cleaned the barbeque, who along with UNF Branch President Slawko Borys set up the tables and chairs. Head bartender was none other than who else, yours truly, Zenon Chwaluk.

Tournament donors and hole sponsors were acknowledged and thanked. They include Anne and Bill Dmytrasz, Cholkan and Stepczuk Chartered Accountants, Zaraska family, Fedun family, Chwaluk family, Blue Goose Tavern (Taras and Luba Chemij), Vachon Enright & Peter Insurance (Chrystyna Kowal), Wola Self Renovations (Vlodko Arendacz), UNF Toronto West Branch, DrainWorks (Taras Cord), Ukrainian Women’s Organization (OYK) Toronto Branch, Karpaty Sports Club, Bohdan and Luba Medicky, Rebryk Family, Ukrainian Credit Union, and Royal Meats Barbeque.

They have graciously donated their registration fees as well as a hole sponsorship ($545). The organizers are very grateful for the generosity of everyone who made a donation and offered sponsorship support, which totalled almost $2,000.

The tournament prize table and raffle donations included: a golf bag from Greg Taras; a gift basket from Greg and Kathy Adamowich, two putters from Eugene Masney; other prize sponsorship from Lease Capital Corporation’s Yarko Makohon; and a Golfer’s Guide Book for each golfer donated by Ukrainian Credit Union. The main raffle prize was the “Paul Fedun Survivor’s Basket” that included golf gloves and balls, a bottle of Chivas Regal, and a trademark cigar. The second raffle prize was a Calloway Diablo Driver. These two raffle prizes (valued at over $400) were donated by Andrew Szewczyk, Andrea Hynes, and Dianna Fedun. Also greatly appreciated were Dianna Fedun’s efforts for selling raffle tickets, having raised $475, and Morris Adamowich for organizing the 50/50 draw, having raised $137.50, won once again by Taras “Horseshoes” Jackiw.

Before sitting down to a marvellous dinner, the ladies of OYK Toronto led the golfers and supporters in prayer – Otche Nash (Our Father). Prior to the award presentations and prizes, Tournament Chairman Eugene Masney delivered a speech worthy of printing on its own. In it he recounted the history of the UNF Camp Sokil Golf Tournament, its primary fundraising goal being to support the Children’s Camp and in commemoration, acknowledged the contributions of the original UNF (Toronto) Finance Committee Members, whose names of the since departed are on a memorial plaque maintained by Morris Adamowich. They read as follows: John Babiak, Bill Harasymchuk, Steve Tuchapsky, Sam (Semen) Dzugan, Mike Mucha, Peter Kosik, Joe Chaszcziwskiy, Paul Fedun, Sr., William Bodykevitch, Paul Romanyshyn, and Michael Rebryk.– L. to R.: OYK members I. Other tournament winners are: Trish Radley for “Closest to the pin – women”; Stephen Masney for “Closest to the pin – men”; Roma Kachmarska for “Longest drive – women”; and David French for “Longest drive – men”. There was some was some controversy surrounding this last award as it should have gone to Boris Sirskyj, having “driven” all the way from Ottawa!

This year’s golf tournament once again was a great success having raised funds with net proceeds of $ 4,600 going to support the UNF (Toronto) “Sokil” Recreation Area and Children’s Camp.

A hearty “Thank You” goes out to everyone who made a donation, all sponsors, supporters and participant players of the UNF Golf Tournament.

Until next year’s tournament and call for golf on August 6, 2011.
