MP Wrzesnewskyj Elected
Vice Chair of Citizenship and Immigration Committee
OTTAWA – On September 29, 2010, Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj (Etobicoke
Centre) was elected First Vice Chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on
Citizenship and Immigration. Nominated by MP Rob Oliphant (Don Valley West)
Official Opposition Critic for Multiculturalism and supported by MP Justin
Trudeau (Papineau) Official Opposition Critic for Citizenship &
Immigration, the nomination was unanimously passed.
“As a child of refugee parents and grandparents
who escaped the horrors of Stalinism, who arrived on freedom’s shores in Canada where they began new
lives in liberty and its consequent prosperity, I fully appreciate the hopes
and dreams that all new Canadians share. I look forward to working with
colleagues from all parties on the Committee to further legislation and policy
that addresses the current dysfunction of our Citizenship and Immigration
regime,” said Wrzesnewskyj.
“Borys has been an outstanding advocate on issues
of immigration, citizenship and multiculturalism for a decade. His passion and
commitment to the welcoming and inclusion of all who choose Canada as their homeland are
exemplary. He adds his depth of knowledge to the longstanding support of
diverse community held by the Liberal Party,” stated Oliphant.
Through Parliamentary Standing Committees,
Members of Parliament engage in the examination of proposed legislation, policy
directions, and program effectiveness. Committees review the money spent by the
government to operate its programs and tables reports in the House of Commons on
its findings after hearing witnesses who provide their expertise and
recommendations.
