October 31  1-5 pm.  Mykola Lysenko: A Symposium sponsored by The Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Ukraine, the Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies, and the Ukrainian Art Song Project. Invited scholars include Olga Andriewsky (Trent), Taras Filenko (Duquesne), Dagmara Turchyn, Rada Stankovych (Tchaikovsky Academy, Kyiv). Lysenko, an enormously influential and prolific 19th-century composer, is regarded as the founder of the art song genre in Ukraine.  Free and open to the public. November 8 1 pm Sudbury Premiere of Okradena Zemlya, the Ukrainian-language documentary film on the 1932-33 Famine-Genocide in Soviet Ukraine, produced and directed by filmmaker Yurij Luhovy. The film is based on recently uncovered archival documents, interviews with historians and first-hand accounts by survivors and eye-witnesses.
