UNF Golfers Hit the Links

By Anna Adamowich and Zenon Chwaluk

On Saturday, August 8, 2009, 37 golfers (including duffers) gathered at the Heritage Hills Golf Club  at Oro-Medonte Line 3 off Highway 11 north of Barrie, Ont. for the ?? Annual Ukrainian National Federation (Toronto) Camp “Sokil” Golf Tournament. There have been so many that we have lost count! Tee-off time was 11 am. and we were blessed with great weather. Camp “Sokil” is located in Hawkestone, Ont., on Lake Simcoe.

Thank you to the golf committee and chairman Greg Adamowich for doing a terrific job as usual. A special thank you to the following people for their contribution: Anne Fedun and Anna Adamowich who shopped for the golf tournament dinner; Anne Fedun, Anne Rebryk, Irene Cord and Genya Hunchak who prepared the dinner; and Morris Adamowich who provided a lunch snack of kovbasa, dill pickle, rye bread and water for each golfer. Heeding the call to roll up their sleeves for the task at hand, the efforts of “apprentice barbecue chefs” Greg Adamowich, Andrew Stamler, Peter Schturyn and Maksym Schturyn were greatly appreciated. Greg Taras was sorely missed as “Head Barbeque Chef” as he was not able to attend this year due to his father’s illness – we extend best wishes for a speedy recovery. UNF Toronto President Slawko Borys did what all presidents do, namely clean the barbeque, and set-up tables and chairs. And as if there could be anyone else for this task, Zenon Chwaluk was the golf tournament dinner’s “Head Bartender”.

After many years helping with dinner, Senta Wozniuk and Lida Peretz were truly missed this year, having decided to take a well-earned “early retirement”. Also missed were Michael Prybyla and the group from UNF Hamilton whom we look forward to seeing at next year’s tournament!

This year, many donations were made in celebration of UNF Toronto Camp “Sokil’s” 50th Anniversary and it was difficult to approach these same supporters again, this time for golf hole sponsorship on such short notice. People and businesses who made additional donations and hole sponsors were acknowledged and thanked with signs on the golfing greens and again at the dinner. They include Anne and Bill Dmytrasz, the Chwaluk Family, Mitchell, Bardyn and Zalucky (Lawyers), the Ukrainian Credit Union Ltd., Rosewood Estates Winery, Eugene Zaraska, George Wodoslawsky, the Blue Goose Tavern, and Kozak Roofing. All together, they contributed  $2550 in total.

The tournament prize table and dinner raffle prizes were prepared by Kathy and Greg Adamowich with donations from: Greg Taras – golf bag; Linda Crane from the Royal Bank, Dundas and Burnhamthorpe Branch; Tanya Kenesky; the Adamowich Family; Ben Mishey – Big Ben Clock Shop (Youngstown, Ohio); Cool Beer Brewing Co.; and Great Lakes Brewing Co.

The categories and winners of this year’s golf tournament are as follows: Nadia Uhryn Krawchuk Memorial Trophy Women’s Champion – Pat Glover (score of 99); Paul Fedun Senior Memorial Trophy Men’s Under 25 Champion – George Magur, Jr. (score of 91); Joe Chaszcziwskiy Memorial Trophy Men’s 25 and Over Champion – Dmytro Badiwsky (score of 72); Men’s Closest to the Pin – Wayne Menichan; and Women’s Closest to the Pin – Marie Stamler. It should be noted that the “50/50 Draw” was won by Taras Jackiw who shall be barred from all future games of chance, as he wins too often!

This year’s tournament again was a success, having raised net funds of $4959 for support of UNF Toronto’s Recreation and Children’s Camp “Sokil”. A hearty thank you goes to everyone who made a donation, all sponsors, supporters and participant players of the UNF Golf Tournament. Until next year’s call for golf tee-off on the links!
