Dominion Carillonneur Played Ukrainian Music from Peace Tower

On October 24th, 2007 the Dominion Carillonneur, Gordon Slater, played the Ukrainian folk melody A Boat Floats (Plyve Choven) on the Peace Tower Carillon, Parliament of Canada and heard by the group of Ukrainian students participating in the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Program who gathered on Parliament Hill to listen to the carillon bells.

In the mid-1980’s, Mr. Slater befriended Roman Zyla, a Canadian student of Ukrainian ancestry who at that time studied at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ont. and worked in Ottawa as a parliamentary intern. This past summer, Dr. Zyla presented the sheet music to this Ukrainian folk song to the carillonneur which he played during the lunch-time concert when Plast Ukrainian youth scouts visited Parliament Hill as part of their Plast Anniversary Jamboree  held last August in Canada. Among the young Ukrainians gathered from many parts of the world was Toronto Liberal MP, Borys Wrzesnewskyj.
