Nash Calls for Internment Site at CNE

NDP MP Peggy Nash has again called on Bev Oda, the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, to use the federal government’s $24 million Community Historical Recognition Program to help recognize the unjust internment of Ukrainian Canadians during the First World War.

Nash suggested that a site commemorating the internment be designated on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto.

In her letter to Oda, dated October 19, Nash wrote: “I believe the Ukrainian community in my riding would be most interested in an historical designation of their internment in World War One at the Canadian National Exhibition site.

“Given that this is property owned by the City of Toronto, and given that the CNE remains to this day an attraction for Torontonians and tourists alike, the site would be a perfect place to recognize the past and commit to a better future.

“I will indeed watch the Canadian Heritage web site for more details. It is my hope that when we apply for support from your office, you will help provide the assistance that the Ukrainian community needs to have this site recognized,” Nash added.
