Famine Documents Published

CALGARY– To mark Ukraine’s day of remembrance for the victims of the genocidal Famine in Soviet Ukraine, which this year falls on November 26, the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association (UCCLA) has released a new publication, The Famine-Genocide of 1932-1933 in Ukraine.

The publication, prepared by Kyiv historian Professor Yuri Shapoval, consists of 81 Soviet-era documents, in Russian and Ukrainian, dealing with the causes and consequences of the Famine, known as the Holodomor.  The book also contains English-language annotations of each document, a list of acronyms, and an introduction in English and Ukrainian by Dr. Shapoval.

Commenting on the collection’s release, UCCLA’s director of special projects, Borys Sydoruk, said: “With this publication we are providing primary source material about the Holodomor to a very large audience by distributing complimentary copies to university and public libraries across Canada and worldwide.”

Funding for the project was provided by the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association in Calgary, with the assistance of UCCLA, the Ukrainian American Civil Liberties Association, the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organizations, and the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain.

A limited number of copies are available for sale to the general public from: The Kashtan Press, 22 Gretna Green, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, K7M 3J2, for $35 (includes postage and handling).
