Holodomor Remembrance
Candle
Winnipeg (UCC) - Canadians will mark the
77th anniversary of the Holodomor Famine Genocide in Ukraine 1932-33 with
commemorative events scheduled across Canada during Holodomor
Awareness Week, November 22-28, 2010.
The focus of this year’s commemorations is Svichka
Molinnia or Remembrance Candle - the initiative of the Ukrainian World
Congress - which began its journey in Kyiv, Ukraine in June. Its flame
will continue to light candles throughout Ukraine and 33 other countries
symbolizing unity in Holodomor remembrance and raising awareness of this act of
genocide and crime against humanity.
The Remembrance Candle was presented during the
XXIII Congress of Ukrainian Canadians in Edmonton, and will be the
symbolic source of light for all commemorations throughout the country as
Canadians continue to Keep the Flame Alive.
A variety of lectures, film nights, discussions
with survivors and commemorative services, and installations of black flags at
prominent locations in cities across Canada will pay tribute to the
millions of children, women and men who were victims of the Soviet regime’s
ruthless genocidal policy against the Ukrainian people.
A Commemoration Ceremony will be held on November
30 in the Nation’s Capital, Ottawa, sponsored jointly by
the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada and the Canada-Ukraine
Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Saturday, November 27 marks International
Holodomor Memorial Day and National Holodomor Memorial Day as legislated by the
Government of Canada. Canadians will honour the memory of the victims
with a moment of silence at 19:32h (7:32 p.m.) and light candles of remembrance in their
homes. Memorial services will be celebrated in churches across the
country on Sunday, November 28.
