Hladyshevsky Wins Liberal Nomination

EDMONTON–Community activist and lawyer Andrew Hladyshevsky won the Liberal nomination in the Alberta riding of Edmonton-Strathcona on Monday December 5.

Speaking after his victory, Hladyshevsky said: “Join with me in providing a strong Alberta voice at the table of good government and together, not only will we achieve a better life for the people of Edmonton Strathcona, but together mould an even more compassionate Canadian–an even more robust Canada–a country that my children and your children can be proud of.”

Although the exact final figures weren’t immediately available, scrutineer Jim Jacuta said Hladyshevsky won “by a good majority.” The day after the nomination meeting, the Edmonton Journal said Hladyshevsky won by about a 100-vote margin. 540 votes were cast.

Hladyshevsky, who is the President of the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko and National Vice President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), beat retired bureaucrat Ellen Schoek in the nomination race. 

Speaking to the Ukrainian News in the June 22-July 19 issue, Hladyshevsky said “there are four major issues on the federal level, which affect the Ukrainian Canadian community. These are: Denaturalization and Deportation, Internment Redress, Immigration-Related Issues and Canada’s Relations with Ukraine. – with files from Ukrainian News.
