CGM Asks PM to Review Museum’s Funding

The Canadians for a Genocide Museum (CGM) have initiated a mail-in postcard campaign to protest Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s decision to provide federal funding for the Canadian Museum of Human Rights as proposed by the Asper Foundation of Winnipeg.

During the last Federal election Harper stated his intention to support the project.

The CGM’s Chairman John Gregorovich said on February 23 that “In principle we support such a project on the condition that it is both inclusive and equitable in all aspects. However we have profound concerns regarding the Asper project.”

The message on the postcards reads: “The proposed Canadian Museum of Human Rights will not be inclusive or equitable in its treatment of the many episodes that have befouled human history before, during and after the Second World War, not only in Europe, but in Asia, Africa, and elsewhere. As such, it is unacceptable and should not be funded or endorsed by your Party or the Government of Canada.”

The GGM is coalition of 42 associations, representing 27 Canadian cultural communities. Its member organizations include the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada, the Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada and the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association.

The current postcard campaign follows closely on the heels of one launched in January, directed towards Governor General Michaлlle Jean, requesting that she withdraw her patronage of the proposed museum.
