So-Use Credit Union Awards Mylchenko Scholarship and Sports Bursary

At the So-Use Credit Union annual general meeting on April 19, the first annual Mylchenko Scholarships and Sports Bursary were presented to five student members.

Mr. Dennis Hunkewich, a Director and Chair of the Scholarship committee, presented the following $1,500 Mylchenko Scholarship awards:

Academic Studies in Business to Adriana Boyko, a dean’s honour list student at the Schulich Business School York University who is specializing accounting.

Ukrainian Studies to Kalyna Klymkiw, a Fine Arts Cultural Studies honours student at York University, who has taken Ukrainian Studies courses since 2004.

Volunteerism in the Community to Tamara Mischena, who will be entering the University of Guelph this fall, majoring in Political Science.  Over the past year, the honours student served on 11 volunteer committees at school and held eight organizational positions in the Ukrainian Canadian community.

Media Studies, toYuri Tereshyn, a grade-‘A” student of Design Technology at Humber College.

In addition, the Sports Bursary for $1,000 was awarded earlier to Mykhailyk Charalambij who was not able to attend the ceremony. Charalambij is studying at Carleton University while pursuing world medals on behalf of Canada in Flat Water Sprint Canoeing.

The four scholarships and one sports bursary awarded annually were established by the late Mr. Alexander Mylchenko, a So-Use Credit Union member. Recognizing a need to support young people in the Ukrainian-Canadian community, Mylchenko left a part of his estate to So-Use Credit Union for this purpose.  Each award is named after a past Director:  In memory of Boris Oranski for excellence in any field of post secondary studies; In memory of William Hunt Hunkewich for post secondary studies in media or journalism; In memory of Dr. William Zincheshin, for work in Ukrainian Studies; In memory of Panas Stepura to a student currently involved in Ukrainian Canadian organizations contributing to their growth and/or success; the Michael Shipowick Sports Bursary for training costs for young Canadians of Ukrainian heritage competing at world and/or Olympic levels.

“This is an area we feel So-Use Credit Union can most assist its future leaders in Canada”, said Walter Chewchuk, Chair of the Board of Directors,  “We want to give our young members an advantage to reach their goals in life. As well, we feel this is a very important role we have to fulfill, as a credit union, to insure the financial health of our members.”

“We thank all the students who applied and congratulate the award recipients for 2005,” Marc Sirard, So-Use Credit Union’s CEO. “On behalf of all members and the Board of Directors, we look forward to the new 2006 recipients.”

A Scholarship Committee reviews all applications received by February 15.  Members can get more information about the awards at each branch or by visiting www.so-use.com, the credit union’s website.
