Bohdan Nahaylo, now based in Geneva, Switzerland, was formerly in London with Amnesty International and in Munich with Radio Liberty. An expert on the USSR and Ukraine, Nahaylo has produced a well designed and well researched volume on Ukraine’s modern history, especially the last 15 years. The events described here are of recent memory such as the surprise visit of American President George Bush to Kiev on August 1, 1991. His infamous speech, called “Chicken Kiev” by the American press, astonished many Ukrainians when he urged Ukraine to stay in the Soviet “Evil Empire” Union with Gorbachev. Ivan Drach expressed the feelings of most Ukrainians who rejected Bush as a spokesman for Gorbachev. Ukraine went on to vote 91% for independence four months later. This is a book which provides much information about Ukraine today which readers will find interesting and even fascinating.
