The New Pathway presents these biographical sketches of individuals who through their service to the community and outstanding achievements were recognized as Nation Builders by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Saskatchewan Provincial Council at a November 4 gala banquet in Regina.
November 4 – Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Saskatchewan Provincial Council (UCC-SPC) held its seventh annual Nation Builders Awards (NBA) banquet today, for the first time outside Saskatoon, at the Hotel Saskatchewan, Radisson Plaza in Regina. Garbed in traditional Ukrainian attire, host and hostess Alex and Pearl Balych greeted guests to the Regency Ballroom. Keyboard player and vocalist Andrij Pityn provided additional entertainment for the 200 in attendance. Keynote speaker for the evening was UCC-SPC president Eugene Krenosky. The 10 individuals honoured for their service to the community and outstanding achievements were: Morris Cherneskey, Angeline (Mialkowsky) Chrusch, Dr. Alexander Danylchuk, Eileen Grace (Shewchuk) Klopoushak, Roman Kroitor , Walter Mysak, Hanka Romanchych, Sonia (Kotzko) Sagasz , Murray Senkus, Jean (Charko) Sternig
Morris Cherneskey
b July 15, 1926 (near Goodeve, SK) d Sept 26, 2000 (Saskatoon, SK). After graduating from Law at the University of Saskatchewan, Morris articled in the firm of Emmett Hall (later a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada). He went on to private practice in Saskatoon for over 40 years was named a Queen's Counsel. Morris served as a reserve naval officer, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. Morris served for 25 years as a Saskatoon City Councilor and was instrumental in having Saskatoon officially twinned with the western Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi. He was active in provincial and federal politics, at one time serving as president of the Saskatchewan Progressive Conservatives. He played a major role in the Ukrainian Catholic Church and its lay organizations. Morris was president of the UCC branch in Saskatoon and for many years, served on the board of the UCC-SPC. Morris strongly advocated for the unity of Ukrainians and for the need to maintain our heritage.
Angeline (Mialkowsky) Chrusch
b April 4, 1939 (Saskatoon, SK). Angeline has dedicated herself to her family, to volunteering in the community and to her parish. She became a member of the St George's Cathedral Branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada in 1965. From that time she took on leadership roles including treasurer and president. She played a major role in the Eparchial UCWLC's history book, Blessed Endeavour, written by Anna Maria Kowcz-Baran. Angeline was active in the Ukrainian Canadian Women's Committee, where she held various positions and helped organize the Ukrainian Radio Program on CFCR. In 1996 she was the Kyiv Pavilion ambassador at Saskatoon's Folkfest. She has been a volunteer board member of the Mus?e Ukraina Museum since 1987.
