"Sviata Vechera" With UWO Toronto

"Sviata Vechera" - translated as "Holy Supper" - is celebrated by Ukrainians around the world every January 6, the evening before Christmas according to the Julian Calendar. Many community organizations later hold "Holy Suppers", for their members, families and guests. Jean Shelestynsky, immediate past president of the Toronto branch of the Ukrainian Women's Organization (UWO) told the New Pathway the branch has been putting them together every year for the last 70 years. This year was no different, with the UWO "Sviata Vechera" held January 13 at the Ukrainian National Federation Hall on Evans Ave. Mrs Shelestynsky was the master of ceremonies for the function, which saw community greetings delivered by Roman Kostuk, UNF National president, Irene Waschuk, UWO National president, Jaroslaw Kowal and Genya Hunchak. Myron Maksymiw's "Boyan" Choir performed rousing renditions ofkoliady - Ukrainian carols. A humorous skit (above), telling how grandchildren and carollers visit a lonely couple, prepared by Vera Storoniak and Orysia Chwaluk, had the audience of 110 splitting their sides.
