Kozak
Takes Over Toronto
Petro Lopata
Yaroslava and Mykhajlo Szafraniuk would have been proud. And they would
have been laughing too. As founders of the Ukrainian Canadian Art Foundation,
they amassed a serious collection of significant works by artist Edward
Kozak (1902-1992). Best known for his caricatures, many of which were published
in the popular satirical magazine Lys Mykyta, Kozaks various pursuits will
be featured in a show at the UCAF gallery in Toronto. The exhibit brings
together quickly created, hand-coloured drawings, like the self portrait
on page 1 (top right) with somewhat darker pieces. In fact the painting
of the two Sitch Riflemen on page 1 (top left) is also by the notoriously
diverse maestro Kozak. Another EKO is featured on page 4, as Mr Magas,
our regular caricaturist is shoveling out of the deep snow in Orangeville.
(Were organizing a rescue party.) For all those not snowed in, see Community
Events on page 15 for full details on the upcoming EKO exhibit at the UCAF.
