Stockwell Day Visits Ukrainian Toronto

(NP) With a heated race for the leadership of the Canadian Alliance Party concluding at a convention in Edmonton April 4-6, former Alliance leader Stockwell Day visited with a conglomerate of ethnic communities in Toronto, seeking support in his bid to regain the party’s top job. Some 50 people were invited to attend the February 9 event, organized by the Canadian Council of Central and East European Communities (CCCEEC). Marcus Hess, CCCEEC president welcomed those present at the Ukrainian Canadian Social Services building in Toronto and introduced Mr Day. After a brief presentation, the leadership hopeful fielded questions from the public. Mr Day slammed the Liberal government, comparing its methods of enforcing party loyalty to those of the highest body of power in the Soviet Union – the Politburo. He criticised the Liberals’ War Crimes Program which has been seen to target Canadians of Central and Eastern European descent, calling it a violation of “basic principles of common law and jurisprudence… [and] evidence.” He outlined his opposition to Bill C-11, in particular to its retroactive nature in dealing with hopeful immigrants to Canada whose cases are already being processed.
