Gloria Lindsay Luby Visits Ukraine 

Toronto City Hall - Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby (Ward 4, Etobicoke Centre) will leave for Kiev, Ukraine to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its independence and explore the possibilities of a twinning with the City of Toronto to enhance trade and culture. The visit is financed entirely by the City Government of Kiev and Councillor Gloria Lindsay Luby. No travel expenses will be charged to the City of Toronto or the Toronto taxpayer.

“Like many Torontonlans of Ukraine descent, I am excited to celebrate the 10 Anniversary of Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union,” said Lindsay Luby. “During my visit, I hope to be able to discuss ways for a greater understanding between Kiev and Toronto to encourage friendship, trade and culture”.

Many Ukrainians immigrated to Canada during and before Soviet rule beginning in 1922. On August 24, 1991 (he Ukrainian Parliament solemnly proclaimed Ukraine's independence and formed the independent state of Ukraine. Kiev was restored as the capital. The City of Toronto will raise the Ukrainian flag in Nathan Phillips Square on August 24, 2001 to mark the anniversary.

After meeting with Kiev officials last year, Lindsay Luby has been promoting a formal twinning partnership with the City of Toronto. The Councillor is expected to meet with the mayor and other city officials on her visit.

“I expect that the Mayor will be very interested in some of the things we are doing in Toronto from waste diversion to economic development,” said Lindsay Luby. “I hope that I will be able to help promote Toronto as an attractive business and cultural investment for Kiev.”
