As reported by Radio Ternopil recently, Ternopil’s city administration has proclaimed 2002 the year of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj. He was head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church from 1944 to 1984. This year is the 110th anniversary of his birth. The city administration of Ternopil plans to hold jubilee events in the city and in the village of Zazdrist, where Slipyj was born. The first step to honor the patriarch was made by the Orthodox community in the village of Zazdrist. It gave the key from the parish church, which was built by Slipyj’s grandfather, to the local Greek Catholic community.
