Dance is perhaps the most familiar and impressive aspect of Ukrainian folk culture. Even to non-Ukrainians, the energetic movements and brilliant coloured costumes of traditional Ukrainian dance are instantly recognizable. It came as no surprise then that the sixth annual Youth Festival of Ukrainian Dance took place before a capacity crowd at the Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre January 27. Audience members were thrilled with performances by top local Ukrainian dance schools Barvinok, Ukrainian Academy of Dance, Yavir and Ukraina. Based at the Dormition of St Mary Church in Mississauga, Barvinok, founded thirty-two years ago and now led by Artistic Director Fedir Danylak and Choreographer Swerbywus, started the show. Next on the stage was the 15 year-old Ukrainian Academy of Dance, directed by Danovia Stechishin. Their program was choreographed by National Artist of Ukraine Rafail Malynovsky. Third on stage was the Yavir School of Ukrainian Dance, under the leadership of Alexander Nebesny. Affiliated with Toronto’s St Demetrius Parish, Yavir marks its 40th anniversary this year. Established in 1998, the Ukrainian School of Arts ensemble “Ukraina” directed by husband and wife team Lesia and Valeri Movchan wrapped up the festival.
