Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on occasion of signing the Treaty between Ukraine and Russian Federation on Ukrainian - Russian borderOn January, 28 an outstanding event has taken place in the history of Ukraine and Russian Federation: Presidents Leonid Kuchma and Vladimir Putin have signed the Treaty on Ukrainian - Russian border. Hereby an important stage of treaty-legal formalization of Ukrainian state border has been completed. Signing of the Treaty opens a new page in a centuries-old history of the Ukrainian and Russian peoples. It expands opportunities for further development of relations between Ukraine and Russia as independent sovereign states and good neighbours. Our peoples have confirmed their aspiration to build their mutual relations on such principles as friendship, cooperation and partnership. Hereby they have made one more contribution to the cause of strengthening European security. The Treaty will assist consolidation of the high level of mutual understanding and trust, civilized resolution of questions at issue, which can arise between Ukraine and Russian Federation. The work that has been carried out is a road-guide to further cooperation in respect of settling remaining problems and a guarantee of their resolution in interests of both sides. To this end Ukraine will continue to make efforts to complete legal formalization of the border along its full perimeter.
