Lviv Airshow Tragedy - Canada's Ukrainian Community Mourns


On July 27, 2002 a tragedy occurred in Lviv (Ukraine) during an airshow when an SU-27 fighter jet clipped the ground and sheared through a crowd of spectators before exploding in a ball of fire, killing 83 people and injuring 138. An Order of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma has established a special commission under the Head of the Defense and Security Council Yevhen Marchuk to undertake an objective investigation of the grounds of this tragedy.

Book of Condolences

The Embassy would like to invite members of the public to add their names to a Book of Condolences to express their sorrow for those injured or killed. The book will be available for signing at the Embassy from 12.00 noon on July 29, 2002 to 4.00 p.m. on July 30, 2002 at 310 Somerset Street West, Ottawa, Ontario K2P 0J9.
