Ukraine-NATO Commission Meeting in Ukraine

February 28, 2000  #12

A delegation of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) at the level of the Ambassadors of NATO countries and NATO Secretary General Lord George Robertson pay the first visit of such a format to Ukraine on 29 February-2 March 2000.

With Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Borys Tarasyuk participating, the Ukraine-NATO Commission will meet on 1 March.

The meeting of the Commission is organised to fulfil the clauses of the Implementation Working Plan of Ukraine-NATO Charter on Special Partnership for the year 2000. It is also a demonstration of implementation of the mechanisms envisaged by the Charter. This will be the 16th Ukraine-Nato Commission meeting since the Charter was signed in Madrid, but it will be the first arrangement of such a level to take place in Ukraine.

The fact that the meeting will be taking place outside of the NATO Headquarters as well as the recent visit to Ukraine by Lord Robertson testify that Ukraine-NATO cooperation is gaining new quality.

The NATO Secretary General and the NAC members are also expected to meet with Prime Minister of Ukraine Victor Yuschenko, Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) Chairman Ivan Plusch and Defence Minister Olexander Kuzmuk.
