Press ReleaseForeign Minister of Ukraine A. Zlenko Will Visit Ottawa on March 26, 2001The Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Anatoliy Zlenko, will visit Ottawa on March 26, 2001. Mr. Zlenko's visit to Canada provides an opportunity to discuss progress on Canada and Ukraine's "Special Partnership," a bilateral memorandum of understanding signed in 1994. This partnership was developed to pursue shared interests, drawing on the heritage of the over one million Canadians who trace their ancestry to Ukraine. The visit will also provide an opportunity to discuss current developments in Ukraine, as well as Ukraine's experience during its March 2001 Presidency of the UN Security Council. During the visit, Canada and Ukraine will sign a Framework Arrangement on the destruction of anti-personnel landmines in Ukraine. This document represents an important step in Canada's co-operation with Ukraine on the destruction of millions of stockpiled landmines in Ukraine, and demonstrates the commitment of both countries to creating an environment of enhanced peace and security in Eastern Europe.
