Castle Mountain Internment Camp Monument Unveiling

The statue, by Kingston-area sculptor, JOHN BOXTEL, depicts a Ukrainian Canadian Internee in the Castle Mountain concentration camp, circa 1916. Some 600 Ukrainians were interned at the Castle Mountain and Cave & Basin camps between July 1915 and July 1917. This is the first ever statue erected in Canada in memory of those imprisoned during Canada's first national internment operations of 1914-1920.

The statue and trilingual historical marker were paid for by the Ukrainian Canadian communities of Banff and Calgary, in cooperation with the UKRAINIAN CANADIAN CIVIL LIBERTIES ASSOCIATION. No federal assistance was received.

There are over one million Canadians of Ukrainian heritage. The UCCLA is a non-profit and non-partisan educational organization mandated by the Ukrainian Canadian community to negotiate a Ukrainian Canadian community to negotiate a Ukrainian Canadian Redress Settlement with the Government of Canada. Despite the UCCLA's 10 year long campaign, Ottawa has refused to acknowledge that an injsutice was done to the internees or to return their confiscated wealth.
