But among the ghastly fruits of the campaign for
collectivization was the 'man-made famine' of 1931-32
in the Ukraine and the northern Caucasus, where it had
been resisted most fiercely and where the fields had
lain almost totally neglected. There were millions
of deaths from starvation in these regions.
